Press release: Gauss Year 2027: we want your ideas!

No. 93 - 03.07.2026

Exciting programme of events planned: submit your project proposals now!

Even today, Carl Friedrich Gauss is seen as one of the most important scientists of all time. 30 April 2027 will be the 250th anniversary of his birth, and the cities of Göttingen and Braunschweig are gearing up to bring together the past and future by celebrating the Gauss Year 2027. The aim is to inspire people about his life’s work, science and technology, and to show how his pioneering ideas remain relevant to the world of tomorrow even today. Everyone interested – whether from the worlds of culture, sport, voluntary organisations or business – is invited to help shape the Gauss Year 2027.

Numerous exhibitions, activities and events are planned for 2027 in Göttingen and Braunschweig, highlighting Gauss, his scientific achievements and the links with current developments in mathematics, the natural sciences and technology. Göttingen’s kick-off event will be a special exhibition at the Forum Wissen, with events at many other venues planned, including: the Historic Observatory; the collection of historical physics instruments at the Physicalisches Cabinet; Göttingen State and University Library’s Historical Building; and Göttingen’s own local museum.

There then follows a wide range of activities for visitors: audio tours – including some specially for families – and events such as a summer festival at the Historic Observatory and a Sunday shopping event, which bring Gauss’s work and legacy to life through an entertaining programme of science, culture and leisure. The 2027 summer semester Göttingen University’s public lecture series, organised together with the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony, will be dedicated to the Gauss Year. In addition, Göttingen’s seventh “Night of Science” will take place in June 2027.

“We want to highlight just how much Gauss’s legacy still inspires us today, and his anniversary is an opportunity to bring complex science to life through contemporary science communication and infotainment,” says Juliane Gehler at Göttingen University, who is coordinating the project in Göttingen. “We warmly invite anyone interested to help shape the Gauss Year 2027. Whether it’s a creative cultural initiative, a sporting event or an exciting project in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences or technology – your ideas will bring the anniversary year to life. Be part of the Gauss Year 2027!”

Carl Friedrich Gauss was born on 30 April 1777 in Braunschweig. His mathematical talent was recognised at an early age and brought him to the attention of the Duke of Braunschweig, who supported his continuing education with scholarships. After completing his studies in Göttingen, he initially returned to Braunschweig before being appointed Professor of Astronomy at Göttingen at the age of just 30. He lived and worked there for 50 years, during which time he played a key role in helping the city develop into a major centre of science.

The Gauss Year is a joint initiative of the City of Göttingen, the University of Göttingen, Forum Wissen, Göttingen Marketing GmbH, the Gauss Society and many other organisations and initiatives in the City.
